Caring for the weakest:

ethical challenges in managing

sick and premature babies.

Dr Amanda Ogilvy-Stuart

(Consultant in neonatal medicine, Rosie Hospital, Cambridge)

Monday 6th November

7.30 – 8.45pm

Trinity Meeting Place, Holy Trinity Church

Essex Street, Norwich NR2 2BJ

Judeo-Christian understanding is that each life, including the new-born, is of unique intrinsic value and must

be protected. Recent developments in neonatal intensive care mean ever-smaller premature babies, and

babies with very severe congenital abnormalities can now be kept alive. This results in several ethical

dilemmas. Should we attempt to resuscitate all premature babies irrespective of immaturity or severity of

disability? Is it ethical to withdraw intensive care once this has been started? How do we balance what is

medically possible with genuine compassion for the child and parents? When does expensive care become

too expensive?

Dr Ogilvy-Stuart will explain some of the ethical guidelines and provide her own insights from the

viewpoint of a Christian doctor. There will be an opportunity for discussion following Dr Ogilvy-Stuart’s talk.
