How do we distinguish right from wrong? Dr Peter Bussey, an experimental physicist with a Christian faith, will be exploring the concept of Natural Moral Law in a 30 minute talk, which will be followed by interactive discussion in small groups.
Peter's starting point is the observation that broadly similar moral beliefs have developed in most civilisations around the world, and throughout history. This phenomenon is often seen as evidence for the existence of "natural law". Peter will examine the thinking behind this idea and ask about the objective existence of human morality. How is it that human beings, evolving out of an amoral animal kingdom, have come to have objective moral beliefs?
The easiest explanation for a scientist with a Christian faith is that God has intervened in human history.
Dr Bussey is a resident of Norwich and affiliated with the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow. He has links with CERN in Geneva and was associated with the search for the Higgs Boson sub-atomic particle. He is an Associate Editor for “Science and Christian Belief” and is the author of a recent book “Signposts to God”, which explains how modern physics and astronomy can point the way towards belief. His talk will be based on his recent article in the April issue of “Science and Christian Belief”.
