Primary Production and Harmful Algal Bloom in Lakes

Date: March 16, 2017, Thursday, 10:00-11:30

Venue: CA Room (1st floor), Institute of Technology of Cambodia

Facilitator: Dr. Natsuike Masafumi (WG4), Tokyo Institute of Technology

Outline: Primary production by phytoplankton are essential for aquatic ecosystem. Coastal and lake are one of the most productive area in the world, due to inflow of nutrients from land through river. While those higher productivities by phytoplankton contribute to biodiversity and larger fisheries production, they sometimes cause harmful algal blooms (HABs) which threaten not only human health but also aquatic ecosystem. Thus, HABs are needed to monitor or reduce.

In this workshop, the facilitator will introduce primary production and HABs, and then discussed about treatments against HABs in Cambodia as listed below.

1. Introduction of primary production

2. Introduction of harmful algal blooms

3. Discussion about treatment against potential HABs in Cambodia
