Micro learning is a focused, flexible, and targeted approach to teaching and learning. It is suitable for today's fast-paced world and shorter attention span. It promotes chunking (strategy to reduce cognitive load on the learner) and enhances confidence of using digital tools.
In essence , micro learning is about students receiving information that they need (in smaller chunks), when they need it (within the module/ semester), in the relevant context, and at a convenient time (synchronous or asynchronous).
Science behind Micro learning takes advantage of the fact that a rapid memory decay happens by progressive injections of new knowledge, and repeated knowledge practice lowers memory decay. Content repetition causes retention. With spacing, and questioning in between helps to enhance knowledge understanding and comprehension. Micro learning leads to disaggregating information into more flexible and reusable components that more specifically target the needs of the learner in the moment of need.
Examples of tools to be used for micro-learning are: m, TedED, H5P, and Podcast. Examples from pedagogical practice are: video bites and podcasts, online assessment tools (such as GoFormative; Zeetings; Padlet; Socrative; Adobe Spark; Evernote), Open Moodle/ Moodle based discussions and forums, gamification and simulation- C Live, lego play, flipped learning cards, digital story telling / e-storyboarding, Online International Learning (OIL) projects (Big Blue Button), narrated power points and audio feedback using Screencast-o-matic, spinning seminars.
