Title: Authentic Assessment

The focus of this workshop is on authentic assessment and it's importance. Authentic assessment aims to integrate all activities in the classroom with what needed to be applied in the real world problem solving situations.

Authentic assessments:

• are not one-shot and more like portfolio
• involve collaboration with others
• make feedback central
• are contextualised and complex & are not atomised into isolated objectives
• involve students’ own research
• assess higher order cognitive skills, not mere recall
• are representative challenges of a field/subject
• are engaging and educational
• make self & peer-assessments part of the assessment
• identify – perhaps hidden – students’ strengths

Authentic assessment is a response to HE criticisms:

• Students’ difficulty in applying their knowledge (no link with real world)
• Students feel unprepared for employment (lack of contextualisation )
• Students feel insecure after finishing the course (lack of problematisation)

Three steps model to build AA:

1) Standards (Create Rubrics): How the skills and knowledge that students gained in my module relate to real world problem solving situation?

2) Design of the tasks (Communicate it with Students): Real-life problem solving - Going Beyond academic formats - Higher order cognitive skills

3) Evaluative judgement and feedback (Self & peer assessment): Sustainable assessment. Assessment that meets the needs of the present and [also] prepares students to meet their own future learning needs.
