This uses Probots and can combine with MFL. Pupils design a town using cards with pictures of land marks i.e. road piece or shop etc. They place under transparent floor sheet. Pupils then import images of their cards into Probot software and begin planning a route through the town based on teachers guide i.e. you should go to particular points and in a particular order. Students have to do this and test, update re test etc. This has worked with years 3 & 4. Clip from BBC Learning Cracking the Code.
As an extension for Probots and MFL at years 5 and 6 is having them perform a car chase i.e. one probot following the other. It is recorded using two flip cams. If one of the cars doesnt have the correct algorithm them you down it the movie! Great for getting two separate working together. This also provides links to video editing which is great for teaching algorithms to the less able and students writing both list of instructions and scripts in literacy.
