Papa Charles Hui 2016 - Information
Link back to the facebook event page
When : 2-4 Sep 2016 (Fathers Day Weekend)
Where : Auckland
The purpose of this hui is to unveil the headstone of Papa Charles and an opportunity for family to gather together to share some old and to make some new family memories. For those of you who are interested in visiting some of our interesting family historic places in Auckland, there is a bus organised to take us on a history trail.
Please note that this hui runs for less than 2 days and some whanau can only attend for less than one day. What we have organised for such a small time frame is rather ambitious and therefore we ask that everyone to please make a conscious effort at being punctual throughout the hui. Auckland traffic can be very slow at times so please factor in time for this when planning your arrival times.

Accommodation For those looking for accommodation, you may stay with friends & family or book a room. We will be basing the hui at the Holiday Inn close to Auckland Airport. We recommend that you book at the Holiday Inn or at one of the many hotels, motels, backpackers or marae close by. When making your booking, ask for airport transfer information if you plan on flying in.
You may search for the latest deals here... http://www.trivago.co.nz/go/c52p59f

If you are prepared to drive a little further out of the airport tourist hot spot, South Auckland is the Polynesian food capital of the world which also has every type of fast food you can imagine.
Friday 2nd Sep
For those who arrive on Friday, we will meet up in the afternoon/evening at the Holiday Inn, Mangere. They have a large lounge/dining/bar area where we can socialise for the evening. There are no formalities organised so you may come and go as you please. If you have any family pics, stories, queries, new ideas that you would like to share, then this would be a good opportunity to do this.
Holiday Inn Restaurant and Bar link here - we have booked a 'Whanau" room where we can also order in pizza, refreshments etc
Saturday 3rd Sep
Note - Being winter, we suggest you pack your wardrobe accordingly. Auckland is well known for its 4 seasons in one day weather. Even if the weather may appear fine in the morning, we suggest you bring a warm jacket, an umbrella and waterproof footwear (or gumboots). There should be plenty of room to store these on the bus.
For those of you that are only able to attend the unveiling and aftermatch, you can catch up with us at Dennys New Lynn around 1:30pm or arrive at Waikumete Cemetery (plot location here) from 2:45pm and the unveiling will start at 3pm.
Waikumete Cemetery is a large place and it is easy to get lost. If you look for the corner of Anzac Parade and Freesia Road within the cemetery, you should be able to find us there. If you arrive early and there doesn't appear to be anything happening, give me a ring to see where we are - Ph 021 1518486 - Merv
It is probably easier to park beside the Glenview Road entrance rather than parking inside the cemetery itself. The aftermatch starts at the Onehunga RSA from 4pm.
For those of you that are also able to participate in the history trail, you will need to get in an early breakfast before assembling to catch the bus. The current plan is as follows:
before 9am Breakfast (where ever)
9am Assemble and board the bus
9:30am Bus departs Holiday Inn
Dinner (RSA) - Onehunga RSA menu here
7-8pm Bus departs to Holiday Inn
There are no formalities planned at the aftermatch. This is another opportunity for family to meet, share and socialise in an informal family setting. You may arrive, order a meal and leave when you please. It would be good to get a group family pic at some stage.

Sunday4th Sep
There are no plans for today apart from saying our goodbyes to whoever is still around and heading home. Some of the out-of- towners may choose to stay on and spend more time in the City of Sails with whanau and make the most of their long trip here.
Whanau wanting to go on the history trail bus will need to book a seat by depositing $5 per head into our account (details here) with the relevant reference details. ie. BusSeats x2JackP. Those that have already donated can email me with the number of seats they require.
The deadline to book seats is Monday 15th August which means that whanau need to commit to the bus by then otherwise find another means of transport to the cemetery.
This will ensure that we get the right vehicle(s) for the right number of people. The price will be be around $15 pp. If we were to fundraise more than what is required for the headstone, then the cost of this could be subsidised.
In either case, it is imperative that you please book.
If there are family members wanting to keep their attendance to the hui a surprise, you can email me with this information in confidence, and I can put you on the bus with my family. - Merv
