Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs are divided into several categories:
Linguistic
Q: What dialect of English does PIE use?
A: American English, as we currently use pronunciation data from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary and Moby Pronunciator II. See our acknowledgments and source code.
Licensing
Q: Is PIE free? Can I use it for non-commercial and commercial purposes?
A: Yes. The PIE schemes are intended as a free and open standard just like HTML, Unicode and English itself. The associated Chrome extensions are free (under a BSD License) and open source (source code here). You can use them for both commercial and non-commercial purposes for free. For example, you can use the Chrome extensions to convert a children's storybook to a PIE edition and sell it, provided that you have no licensing issues with the original book.
