It has been a while since I posted a current update of our world trip. We hardly had any internet for a week or so. For the first time in 3.5 months of traveling! However, it was in a spectacular location, in the South of Peru. In a mythical place that has been on my bucket list for a long time. The greatest Inca discovery of all time. Machu Picchu!
Flying to Cuzco. After a few wonderful days in Lima we first went to Cuzco. With the plane. Luxury horses
. So far we have done everything by bus, but now we were done with it for a while. The bus to Cuzco would take about 22 hours, of which at least 2/3 is over hairpin bends… A direct flight was only € 30 more expensive per person, so then we had made the choice very quickly. It was not the most relaxed flight ever with a lot of turbulence and rocking, but it was really nice that we were already there after an hour of flying. After a good night's sleep, I unfortunately woke up some sick people. Burden of altitude. Cuzco is more than 3,300 meters high and since we had flown from sea level, that difference was apparently a little too big for my body
. I stayed in bed a bit until we took the bus to the Sacred Valley; the valley that surrounds Cuzco and is really beautiful! But I'll tell more about that later.
New Year's Eve at Machu Picchu. After 2 days on New Year's Eve we went from the village of Ollantaytambo to Aquas Calientes; the base for visiting Machu Picchu. The most common way to get there is actually by train. Directly from Cuzco or from one of the villages in the Sacred Valley. The only point is that those trips are really expensive. Just ridiculous! For a 2-hour one-way trip from Ollantaytambo you pay $ 80 per person. $ 80! You can easily sleep 5-6 nights for two people there and often including breakfast ... Not normal right? So we went looking for another way and that is fortunately there. A minibus from Ollantaytambo to Hidroelectrico cost us 50 soles per person, which amounts to approximately € 15. You can then walk from Hidroelectrico to Aquas Calientes. A 2 hour walk,
. You can also opt for the last piece by train. Then for $ 28 per person you are in a train for 20 minutes. Anyway, this certainly saves a lot of money and is definitely recommended!
Popping! At the end of the day we arrived in Aquas Calientes. What a beautiful location! Really super nice. The Lonely Planet is far from positive about Aquas Calientes, but I have to say that we thought it was a very pleasant village. Mega-touristy, but a nice atmosphere. After we found a very affordable hostel, we scored tickets for Machu Picchu the next day. On top of January at Machu Picchu, great isn't it ?! Then we picked out a nice restaurant, where we had a nice dinner and drank caipirinhas. After all, it was New Year's Eve. In the meantime the popping started a bit, we called home and I got the feeling of new years eve. When it was almost 12 o'clock, we went to the main square in Aquas Calientes and the party really started.
.
The next morning we had to get up at 5 in order to be at Machu Picchu on time. At 6 o'clock we were at the gate and we were very lucky, because the weather was not too bad. Next time I will tell more about Machu Picchu, because this place really deserves an extensive article!
How was your New Year's Eve? What have you done?
