Train service to Machu Picchu is suspended and several airports are currently closed. How the situation will develop is currently not foreseeable.
The Federal Foreign Office is currently advising against unnecessary trips to Peru. Travel to the Arequipa region and the Cusco region with the Inca site of Machu Picchu is currently "strongly discouraged" - the train service between Cusco and the Inca city was already suspended on Tuesday.
The reason is unrest and protests in the Andean country after President Pedro Castillo was deposed. The government has declared a 30-day nationwide state of emergency.
Because of the unrest, the Panamericana Highway was blocked in several places, according to the Foreign Office. Even tourist buses would not get through. Other routes are also partially impassable. Arequipa, Cusco and Juliaca airports are currently closed.
It´s not foreseeable how long the condition will last and how the situation will develop. The Federal Foreign Office advises those who are on-site to remain vigilant, obtain information from the local media and the Peruvian police's Twitter channel, and stay away from crowds.
Tourists in the country should register with the Peruvian tourism authority so that they can get an overview of the vacationers affected. The Federal Foreign Office has bundled all recommendations for action in its travel advice on the Internet.
Travel advice is not legally binding. Anyone who has booked individually must assess the risk themselves. If you have booked a package tour, it is best to contact the tour operator.
