I have added this section to give a review of some questions which I have faced as a teacher of the Introduction to Physics Course. I emphasize that I am also learning Physics.
What is the etymological meaning of Hypotenuse?
The word hypotenuse derives from Latin hypotēnūsa, a transliteration of Ancient Greek hypoteínousa (pleurā́ or grammḗ), the feminine present participle of hypoteínō, a combination of hypó ("under") and teínō ("I stretch"). The word ὑποτείνουσα was used for the hypotenuse of a triangle by Plato in the Timeus 54d. [1]
