Forgiveness
There is a man who lives with his mother, wife, and daughter. One day, he buys a pair of pants that are 10 centimeters too long. He knows he can't go out with his friends the next day with pants that are too long, so he wants to get them shortened. First, he goes to his mother and asks if she can cut 10 cm off his pants. But she has a bad headache and feels sick, and says, "Sorry son, I can't cut your pants today." So the man goes to his wife to ask if she can cut his pants. She too does not feel well because she has had a very long busy day, and says, "Sorry, I can't cut your pants today." Finally, the man goes to his daughter and asks if she can cut 10 cm off his pants. The girl already has plans to go out with her friends, and says, "Sorry father, I can't cut your pants today." So the man is disappointed and goes out (in another pair of pants). Meanwhile, his mother feels bad and goes and cuts 10 cm of his pants. His wife also feels bad for not helping, so she too goes and cuts 10 cm off his pants. When his daughter gets home, she also feels bad and cuts another 10 cm off his pants. The man comes home, and the next morning looks at his pants...they are 20 cm too short now! But instead of getting mad, the man laughs and goes out in his newly cut pants. His friends give him strange looks, but he doesn't care because he knows his family cut his pants out of love.
The story teaches that you should not be quick to be angry or judge. Maybe his pants are ruined, but the man's family loves him, so he forgives them. It is an important lesson that we should all remember.
Also, at the beginning of a new year, it is important to forgive and forget regarding events that happened the last year. During the forgiveness meditation session on New Year's Day, there are three main parts.
1) Forgive yourself.
2) Forgive those who have hurt you.
3.) Seek forgiveness from those you may have hurt.
It's very important to start each year fresh, so remember that forgiveness is important year-round.
