Right Livelihood

September 2014

Dear Readers,

Thank you for continuing to learn about the Noble Eightfold Path. If you want to see the old newsletters about the Noble Eightfold Path, scroll down to the "Old Newsletters" section and click on the links. This month, we will be learning about the fifth step on the Noble Eightfold Path, Right Livelihood. But first, lets review.

Life has dukkha (suffering). The way to be free of suffering is to follow the Noble Eightfold Path by practicing eight points: Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration. Try to follow the Noble Eightfold Path in your life, and you will have complete happiness, free from suffering.

What is Right Livelihood? Right Livelihood is living your life so that will not harm yourself or others. It's similar to Right Action.

Just think, "How can I make my life meaningful and kind?" You can do this by practicing Right Livelihood. Never lie, cheat, or steal.

Everything you do must use these to have Right Livelihood:

1. Be honest

2. Be moral

3. Be meaningful

Everything you do in life should be done selflessly - think about others when you do them. Whenever you practice Right Livelihood, you can get a better understanding of the world because you are open-minded and kind. Everyday will feel better when you practice good skills in Right Livelihood. Remember, it's okay if you accidentally make a few mistakes. Just make sure that you learn from them and try hard not to do them again!

Now we have completed learning about five steps on the Noble Eightfold Path: Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, and Right Livelihood. Remember to use what we learned in your life! Check back in October to learn about the next step, Right Effort.

Thank you for learning!
