What is Poya?

March 20, 2011

Hello Friends!

I hope you are enjoying the website! I wanted to take a moment to talk about something a little bit different today--the moon! Have you ever looked outside your window, and seen that the moon was VERY big? That's because it's very close to the Earth. In Buddhism, that day is called Poya, or a full moon day. The Buddha was born on Vesak Poya in May. Poya is a very special holiday in Sri Lanka. Many places are closed, and people just relax. As Bante Pemaratana says in his talk, Poya is a day for many people to reflect on what is going on in their lives. So take this Poya to enjoy the BIG full moon, and think about how your year is going so far. Talk to you soon!
