Kenneth Miller Adams (1897 – 1966)

American artist

He painted realistic landscapes, portraits, nudes, and florals.

He was born in Topeka, Kansas on Aug. 6, 1897.

At 16, Adams studied under George Melville Stone in Topeka, Kansas

in 1916 he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago

Kenneth Miller Adams was a student of K.H. Miller, George Bridgeman, G.M. Stone, Maurice Stern, & Eugene Speicher

He served as a private in the Army in World War I.

In 1919 he attended the Art Students League of New York studying under K.H. Miller, George Bridgeman, Maurice Stern, & Eugene Speicher.

He worked  with Andrew Dasburg in Woodstock, NY during his summers.

He traveled to France & Italy, painting landscapes from 1921-23.

In 1924 he moved to Taos, NM to be with Andrew Dasburg and Walter Ufer.

in 1926 he joined the Taos Society of Artists as its last and youngest member.

In 1927 the Taos Society of Artists disbanded.

In 1929 he began teaching at the Taos Field School of Art.

In 1933, he painted for the Federal Art Project.

In 1937 he was commissioned to paint "Rural Free Delivery" in the Goodland Post Office.

He created murals for Washington, DC, the University of New Mexico, and the Kansas State College. 

In 1938 he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and served a tenured professorship as artist-in-residence at the University of New Mexico up to his retirement in 1963.

In 1961 he was was honored by election as a academician of the National Academy of Design.

In 1964 the University of New Mexico recognized him with a retrospective of his work.

He died in 1966 in Albuquerque, New Mexico
