Long Division

The Lesson

This lesson plan was created for a demonstration lesson in a 3rd grade classroom. I was asked by the teacher to teach the students long division. Prior to my lesson, the teacher had introduced the steps of long division to the class through a math rap. I was also informed by the teacher that around 75% of the students did not understand the concept of figuring out how many times a number goes into another (for example, how many times 3 goes into 8). She had originally presented the concept to them as figuring out how many groups of 3 she can make with 8 pieces of candy. I approached the concept differently by using multiples and showing the students how many multiples of a 3 can go into 8. I also created a worksheet for students to practice this new skill. Challenge problems were also provided on the worksheet for students who completed it early.
