Chinese New Years

The Lesson

My Master Teacher had ordered a subscription of Scholastic News magazines for the class which provided four different magazines per student every month. One of the magazines was about China and Chinese New Years so I took that as an opportunity teach the students about Chinese New Years. Although this was a culture lesson, it also had activities that covered Language Arts and Social Studies standards embedded into it. Students' critical thinking skills were also fostered through the usage of thinking maps. Positive social skills were also reinforced as students wrote Chinese New Year blessings to give to their kindergarten buddies.
