This lesson was created for a demo lesson. I was asked to teach a 2nd grade ELA lesson. After student teaching in a second grade classroom, I thought a great ELA lesson to teach would be on a writing standard that students in 2nd grade work out throughout the school year, writing a friendly letter.
This lesson is intended to be the first of a series of lessons. During this lesson, I would introduce a project that the class would be participating in throughout the school year, writing friendly letters to pen pals in a different class or school. I then completed the lesson by introducing to the class what a friendly letter is and the essential elements in a friendly letter. In this lesson, I utilized visual aids through the use of the "Friendly Letter Man" and color-coding. I also utilized thinking maps to help students organize their thoughts and begin the pre-writing of their first friendly letter.
Future lessons following this one would scaffold students through the process of writing a friendly letter and going through the steps in the writing process: pre-write/brainstorm, first draft, revise and edit, and final draft.
