Take a block of wood, add some wheels and turn it into a racecar! That's what Cub Scouts do for the Pinewood Derby, where scouts compete to see who can build the fastest, coolest, most interesting car. Each scout receives a car kit as part of their annual fee.
Scouts (not their parents) design their cars and then shape them using power tools. Cars are then sanded, painted, and put together according to official race rules (eg all 4 wheels must touch ground, and weight may not exceed 5 ounces). Parents or siblings can make their own cars to participate in the (unofficial) family derby races, too. On race day, parent volunteers operate the PWD Cafe to help feed this family night of fun.
Additional Pinewood Derby kits can be purchased for $5 each. Parents and siblings are encouraged to participate in designing and racing cars of their own.
Pack 462's Pinewood Derby is held in January or early February. Winners of the Pack 462 Derby go on to compete at the District Pinewood Derby (usually held in February).
