Questions and Problems

Do you have any good books?

      • Problem: Is the student having trouble identifying his/her own areas of interest or in communicating those interests to the listener?

Where are the books about ________?

      • Problem: Student does not know how the library is organized.

What do you mean Fiction and Nonfiction?

      • Problem: We are using vocabulary that students need to acquire.

Are any of the Maniac Magee books in?

      • Problem: Students do not know that they can do an electronic search, or what they can find in doing a search.

Students ask their questions, but it is up to us to identify the real problem.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could find a book about a special topic you have in mind?

Goal:

    • Students will be able to self-select their book of choice from the shelves for personal reading.

Learning Objectives

    • Students will be able to create a poster grouping fiction and nonfiction book covers into their categories.

    • Students will be able to look up a book within the online catalog and determine if the book is currently available in the library.

    • Students will be able to determine the book's location from the catalog entry (fiction or nonfiction section) and retrieve the book from the shelves.

    • Standard 3: Build reading skills and behaviors for life-long learning.

    • LIB 2.3.C Self-select reading materials from a variety of genres and formats.
