Picture Discussion Points: Foreground, background, objects in picture, Line: length, movement

Supplies:

  • Navy blue construction paper

    • Cut 2" off length and width

  • Light blue or black construction paper for matting finished work

  • Oil pastels: white, yellow, black, red, blue, and orange (remove all other colors)

Don't try to recreate the whole picture.

    • Using their best handwriting, have artists put their names in the lower right hand corner of their piece.

      • Hint: Ask students to write their names on a slip of paper first to help them see how far from the right edge they will need to begin writing.

    • Have students select areas and objects of interest in Starry Night.

    • In the students' pictures they should try to include one main line showing movement, a moon, star(s), and an object.

    • Draw pressing firmly. Show students to put a piece of paper over drawn work so their hands won't smear the oil pastels.

    • Repeat shapes around objects using short lines to make them look like they are radiating.

Here you'll find Don McLean's story of Vincent (Starry, Starry Night). It's cool to know that, a copy of the sheet music and Van Gogh's paint brushes, are were placed in a time capsule beneath the Van Gogh Museum, when it opened in Amsterdam in 1973.
