저작운동에 따른 저작근(교근, 측두근, 외측익돌근 상두·하두, 내측익돌근)의 활동 그리고 저작 시에 활동하는 다른 근육(악이복근, 설근, 흉쇄유돌근 등)의 활동을 하악운동, 절치점운동, 하악두운동과 함께 동시에 기록하여, 이들 근육의 기능적 역할 및 반사적 역할을 연구하였습니다 (참고문헌1-12).악구강 영역의 디스토니아, 디스키네시아 등의 운동이상증, 기타 브럭시즘, 교근비대증, 근돌기 과장증, 저작근건·건막 과형성증, 악관절증 등 저작근의긴장이상에 기인하는 질환의 임상적 연구를 시행하고 있습니다 (참고문헌13-29). 특히 뇌파(운동관련 뇌전위, 수반음성변동, 체성감각유발전위), 근전도(표면근전도, 침근전도, 유발근전도), 뇌자도(운동관련 뇌자장, 체성감각유발뇌자장), 근적외선 스펙트로스코피와 기타 비침습적 뇌기능 측정장치를이용하여 악구강 영역의 전기생리학적 연구를 시행하고 있습니다 (참고문헌15,16,19, 21-27). 하악, 저작, 설운동 또는 입술, 혀, 잇몸, 구개에서의 지각이 중추에서 어떻게 조절되며, 악구강 영역의 질환에 어떤 변화가 나타나는지를 연구하고 있습니다. 예를 들면, 운동준비를 위한 대뇌기저핵, 보족운동령의 활동으로 여겨지는 운동관련 뇌전위는 폐구, 개구, 우측방, 좌측방 운동의 순서로 진폭이 높으며 (참고문헌15,16,19), 악구강 디스토니아에서는 저하되는 것으로 보고하고 있습니다 (참고문헌19, 21). 또한, 뇌자계를 이용하여 연구개(軟口蓋) 자극에 의한 반응을 체성감각 뇌자장으로 기록하고, 양측의 2차감각령에 반응이 인지되는 것 (참고문헌23), 뇌자계를 이용하여 혀의 지각에 대해서도 보고하고 있습니다 (참고문헌27, 29).
