December 2015 Newsletter

Post date: Sep 16, 2015 2:37:08 AM

Greetings from your PDGA State Coordinator. It’s time for an updated newsletter to cover the last three months of activity.

There were six PDGA sanctioned events since September 1st. These events covered a wide swath of the state and featured some really great courses. I would like to personally thank the TD’s that stepped up to make these happen. As I am sure you can imagine this is a sometimes thankless job that takes a ton of work to do it right.

The first event was the 12th Annual Twisted Flyer Open presented by Innova Disc Golf. Joe Rotan always does a great job running this event and 2015 was no exception. The event had 100 players with some really exciting competition. Larry Gardner won the Open division with Jennifer Allen taking the Open Women’s honors.

Next up was the River View Open held in Miami OK. The event drew 52 players and was a sanctioned C tier.

An Oklahoma tradition followed with the Oklahoma Open presented by Innova Disc Golf with both B & A tiers being played. The events drew an even 200 players between them. The weather held and both days were very enjoyable. Yours truly TD’d the A tier and my partner in crime Dough Duff, along with Teresa Duff and Kim Aycock ran the B Tier. We has a big players party at Black Hawk Saturday night with burgers and hot dogs for everyone, adult beverage in a keg and a cool Fly Mart. Joe Rotan was in attendance with the really cool Innova van which was a nice addition.

The Stillwater Classic made a comeback with a great title sponsor. This was a two day B tier under The Original Hideaway Pizza Classic. My oldest son Matthew Treat was the TD and he even let me help! We had a great turnout form Ponca City which has a very active club. Stillwater now has four great courses and all were played over two days. If you haven’t played the two new courses at Lake McMurtry just outside of Stillwater you are missing out. Tom Lowery and his son did the design and they are really great. This is a different kind of Disc Golf than you can find anywhere else in the state. And of course Boomer Lake is still one of the most tradition laden courses around.

The final sanctioned event of the year was at the awesome (relatively) new course in McAlester. The 2nd Annual Buffalo Run Pro/Am. The TD was Matt House with Co-TD TJ Goodwin. The event had 83 players and was a big success. Again, if you haven’t made it down south to play this course you are missing out. Matt House has done an outstanding job. There are great tee pads, tee signs and multiple placements per hole. Bottom line this is a must play!

The next sanctioned event is the McClure Open sponsored by freshdiscgolf.com. Devan Owens will be the TD and I am sure this will be a ton of fun.

September 2015 Newsletter

This is written by your returning PDGA Oklahoma State Coordinator Michael Treat. Tom Reese has stepped down as SC and I agreed to take back over. Tom did an extraordinary job as I knew he would. I picked him as my successor because I recognized his talents and love of our sport. I wish Tom the best as I know you all do and I look forward to his return to our unique world.

I think a good place to start is to recap some local tournaments and talk about some of you who were on the road recently representing Oklahoma Disc Golf.

The Oklahoma Flying Disc Championships, a C-Tier, were held in Tulsa this year on June 27th & 28th. We had 71 players this year and many participated in both disc golf and the field events. Coda Hatfield won the MPO division with a hot -11. I will post the field event results once I have them.

Next up was the Kenneth Brent Edwards Memorial, C-Tier. This is a relatively new tournament and it is well supported with 92 players participating.

Up next was the Cleveland County Classic, B Tier, with Billy Engel as the TD. A great turnout of 133 players.

July continued to heat up with the Hotter than Hell at Dolese Park. This was a C-Tier with 90 players.

August kicked off with a new tournament to Tulsa, The 1st Annual H2O presented by Hyzerbomb Discs, B-Tier. Matt Siri ran a great event that we all hope becomes a Tulsa tradition.

None other than Joe Rotan rolled his 12th Annual Twisted Flyer Open presented by Innova Disc Golf into Dolese Park in OKC. This was a C/B Tier with 100 players. Joe does a great job and he always remembers our Military past and present.

That brings us up to date on the local tournaments. Several Oklahomans traveled to the Am and Pro Worlds. Am Worlds was held in beautiful Kalamazoo MI. Brandon Cawthorne placed 11th in Advanced, quite an accomplishment in that field! Nick Papineau was close behind in 18th.

Pro Worlds was held in Pittsburgh PA on some tough wooded courses. Devan Owens place a very respectable 23rd out of 143 players. Matt House placed 52nd and Tim Mirabal placed 78th. Jennifer Allen placed 9th in Open Women out of 48 players. The old guys definitely stepped up with Eric Rainey, Ron Convers and Mitch McClellan finishing 3rd through 5th respectively. Great job as each was in series contention at various times.

Last but not least, Devan Owens and Tim Mirabal made a series run through Europe placing very well at each event. It is great to see our local players stretching the touring out to that extent!

Until next time, keep throwing and be sure to support the PDGA. Your membership is very important. If you sign up beginning October 1st, your membership is good all the way through 2016.
