If you have any vacation requests, please request them at least six weeks prior to the rotation. Email paeds.education@nygh.on.ca for vacation requests and complete the appropriate vacation request form. Vacation/personal days/professional days need to be approved by the rotation prior to program approval. Prior to the start of your rotation, you will receive an email asking for all call requests, clinic half-day back etc. About a month prior to the start of your rotation, you will receive information about your schedule for the block, on-call schedule, teaching schedule and contact information for all the pediatricians and sub-specialty clinics and orientation information.
On your first day, you will meet for orientation. The specific location will be included in the teaching schedule. Try not to be post-call or take vacation on your first day so you do not miss the orientation.
In PGY-1, you will divide your time between a community Pediatric office, seeing newborns on 2W, in the general Pediatric ambulatory clinic and some ward.
In PGY-2, you have some flexibility in your schedule depending on your personal learning objectives. You will be assigned to a variety of experiences including the following:
In-patient ward
General Pediatric Ambulatory Clinic
Respirology
Cardiology
Dermatology
Allergy
Neurology
Endocrinology/Diabetes
Gastroenterology
Breastfeeding
Nephrology
Newborns
Clinics are located throughout the North York area. The majority are walking distance from the hospital or on the subway line. Please let us know, in advance, if you have any requests regarding the types of clinics that you would like to attend during your rotation.
Please call your clinics in advance to confirm start times. Let us know if there are any cancellations.
You will have between 4-7 calls per block in both PGY-1 and PGY-2. The number of calls will depend on the number of residents and clerks on the rotation as well as different program requirements and specific learner accommodations from the university. You may be on-call with a clerk or elective trainee. Your staff remains in-house with you. Week days calls are overnight in-house calls from 5PM – 9AM. Weekend and holiday calls are 24 hours, from 9AM to 9AM the next day.
When you come on-call, meet in room 278 in the conference room to receive handover from the day team.
You will receive consults from ER, Labour and Delivery, Maternal/Newborn Unit, Pediatric Short Stay Unit and the in-patient Unit. You are not responsible for NICU patients, unless you are interested. On the weekends, you are expected to round on all of the pediatric in-patients on 4N.
Tips for Call
Review ALL consults with your staff BEFORE entering any orders.
Update the physician handoff sheet with any new admissions or issues.
All orders for the in-patient unit, post-partum and ER are done via Powerchart. Most of the common admission diagnoses and medications have dedicated order sets with evidence links.
All written documentation (consults, admissions, discharges, progress notes) for hospital clinics, ER, Pediatric Short Stay Unit (PSSU), Labour and Delivery, Post-partum, NICU and the ward are done in PowerChart via DynDoc.
There are daily morning teaching sessions from 8-9 am throughout the rotation. Tuesdays are Paediatric Grand Rounds and are in the academic centre. Teaching sessions on the other days are in the complex care clinic room. Your placements know that you have morning teaching and understand that you will be there after 9 am. PGY2s will present a brief case-based presentation during one of the Grand Rounds.

Evaluations
Evaluations are done via an on-line encounter card system. At the end of each shift, ask each staff member that you work with (in-clinic and on-call) for feedback and complete the encounter card together. A minimum of 5 evaluations is expected per block. If there are any significant concerns, you will be contacted immediately. All encounter cards will contribute to your final evaluation. Arrange to meet with the pediatrician completing your evaluation at the end of the rotation to review your final evaluation.
