Improving Quality in Primary Care
The primary care quality improvement (QI) curriculum for family medicine residents has been designed as a comprehensive, longitudinal program during the first year of residency.
Goal:
To equip family medicine residents with the basic tools to integrate quality improvement into their current and future practice.
Learning Objectives:
To understand the role of engaging in quality improvement work in realizing the IHI triple aim of better patient outcomes, cost effectiveness and improved patient experience.
To engage in collaborative, inter professional teamwork to contribute to collective improvements in practice.
To apply the science of improvement to improve systems of patient care.
To utilize data in various forms to improve the quality of patient care and optimize patient safety.
To demonstrate a commitment to improving quality for patients from an individual, team, organization and system perspective.
The curriculum is comprised of three components:
1. A series of self-guided online learning modules
2. An application session at your local site
3. A QI practicum supervised by a faculty preceptor at your site
1. The self-guided online learning modules
The 8 curriculum modules on Articulate Rise are designed to introduce core content and to act as a resource during the curriculum experience while completing a practicum. The content is accompanied by a cadre of referenced material, including peer-reviewed journal articles, white papers, and video links. This can be found on Quercus.
2. The faculty-led application session
Co-ordinated at your local site. This session will highlight aspects of the content that were introduced in the online modules and provide an opportunity for you to apply knowledge and skills that you acquired.
3. The QI Practicum
All residents are expected to complete a QI practicum as part of their PGY-1 requirements. You will be paired with a faculty supervisor at your local site for this. The Post-Graduate QI Practicum guide can be found on Quercus
Practicum deliverables:
Local site requirement:
You will need to submit your practicum to your local supervisor to allow them to evaluate and give you feedback on your project. This may be in the form of a project poster, documents or a report, or a presentation slide deck. Please check with your local supervisor regarding this.
Central DFCM requirement:
At the end of your practicum you will be expected to submit a poster to the DFCM summarizing your project. You will do this at the same time as you complete the final evaluation for the curriculum.
After you complete the final evaluation of the post-graduate QI curriculum you will be prompted to submit your practicum poster. Please ensure you are ready to submit your practicum information and poster (in PDF format) at the same time as you complete the final evaluation.
