Overview of Rotation
The Geriatric Rotation at North York General Hospital provides Family Medicine residents with
exposure to inpatient geriatric care (acute care of the elderly unit and consult service) and outpatient geriatric care (clinics and outreach home visit). At the beginning of their rotation, residents receive a brief orientation with regards to schedule as well as learning objectives for the rotation. Topics that are mandatory for the rotation include: dementia, delirium, falls, polypharmacy, Parkinson’s disease & weight loss. Formal and informal teaching is conducted
during the rotation with different attending staff.
Schedule
The schedule is set up as 4-weeks rotation: 2 weeks of Acute care of the Elderly (ACE) service and 2 weeks of Consult service (ICT) and clinics and when possible one outreach visit. Residents are expected to take less than 7 days of holiday during a 4-weeks rotation. Family medicine residents should inform the geriatric education lead as well as family medicine coordinator in advance about vacation and conference time requested. The schedule is set up by the Department of Family Medicine and with the help of the geriatric education lead, Dr. Bianca Petrut.
There will be no call responsibilities for a 4 weeks geriatric rotation.
Preceptor Assignment
At the beginning of rotation each resident is having a brief orientation by the program education lead. Residents are provided with a schedule for the 4 weeks rotation. On the schedule, for each day there is the name of the supervising staff in clinic as well as the name of the supervising staff for inpatient service provided. Schedule is including phone numbers and contact information of
our different attending staff.
Educational Activities
Residents are expected to attend:
Internal Medicine Rounds each Tuesday morning from 8AM to 9AM
Geriatric Journal Club & Geriatric City-Wide Rounds Friday morning 8AM to 9AM (once per month)
Assessment
Residents are assessed daily by each supervising staff on how they present inpatient and
outpatient cases, orders, dictations etc. Final evaluation is completed by the education lead
with input from different supervising staff.
