PARO stands for Professional Association of Residents of Ontario. Prior to 2013, PARO was known as PAIRO (Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario). PARO is the official voice for all resident physicians in Ontario, advocating on your behalf and optimizing our training and working experience to ensure patient receive the best possible care. You are are automatically part of PARO along with all other post-graduate residents training in accredited programs leading to certfication by the RCPSC or CFPC.
PARO is an organization with proportional resident representatives across the province. The General Council is elected in August of each year with representatives selected from various programs and years across each city in 22 electoral regions. The Board of Directors also has resident representatives. PARO resident representatives plan events and social activities to enhance resident well-being and reduce social isolation. They also negotiate work hour agreements and call stipends. See the PARO Website for more information.
All call stipends are entered through POWER. Once you're logged on, click on "On-Call Stipend" on the navigation sidebar. Then click "Data Entry". You will then be able to add each call shift. Remember, the call stipend is paid out on a MONTHLY basis, NOT according to your block. Therefore, within one month of call stipends, you may have multiple rotations listed.
The following is the classification for call stipends. Please refer to the PARO site for more detailed information.

The PGME office provides a subsidy of up to $325 for incoming MOH funded residents taking the ACLS course for the first time. We don’t subsidize for recertification unless the MOH funded resident has never been reimbursed by the PGME office before. Also, only the course fee is subsidized. The subsidy doesn’t cover any training materials. R2, RE,… residents funded by the Ministry are eligible if they have never been subsidized in their early years.
If ATLS or PALS, etc. is a program requirement and residents wish to take those courses instead of ACLS, we provide a one-time subsidy of $325. However, we do not provide a subsidy for both. (i.e. ACLS & PALS).
Please ask your (eligible) residents to mail me the ORIGINAL receipts along with proof of payment (i.e. a receipt showing a zero balance or showing the last few digits of your credit card to show that it was paid) to the address below in order to get reimbursed.
