Clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and spacer plates hafta come off so they can go on the new engine.
Made some reference marks, just in case, but the service manual is right in that the flywheel and pressure plate are doweled, so should be only one way it can go back on...but better safe than out-of-balance!
Clutch and pressure plate removed, that flywheel could probably stand a resurfacing, but nah!
Flywheel removed.
Engine plates removed.
I'm not so sure about the condition of this lower plate. Is that lip/curl supposed to be there? Did it get damaged? Should i just try and put some sealer in there? What is it sealing? Will i try and find one at the junkyard?
Pilot adapter (left) for the automatic transmssion will hafta come out so that a NEW pilot bearing (right) for the manual transmission can go in!
This didn't work, although maybe it did, in that I was able to turn the pilot adapter, maybe making it easier to pull out with the slide hammer.
...had to modify the adapter (thanks to my Dad's bench grinder!) to get enough bite on the pilot adapter. It never REALLY bit "well", I had to pretty much wedge the puller in the adapter to keep it from slipping out!
Booyah!
AMC? I wonder if this will work on the Jeep...Anyhoo, new pilot bushing installed. I didn't use a bearing driver, like they recommend, but I did use a deep-well socket (and white lithium grease on the recess in the crankshaft), and you can see how it started to chip at the bottom of the bushing...oh well!
Gotta clean these plates, taking note of where the sealer is/was.
Whoop, there it is!
The plate had what looks like orange sealant on it, but I couldn't find any at the one auto parts place I went to, so blue it is!
Used some nuts, bolts and washers to hold the plates together while the sealant cured (didn't think of doing that until about 10 minutes and 30 shifts of the plates later!)
Plates on wrong (no wonder all the bolt holes wouldn't line up!) and then on correctly.
I used blue threadlocker on the bolts (would red have been better? seeing as how there was NONE on the factory ones, AND the factory manual doesn't call for any (the other manuals do), blue it is, again!). Oh, had an assistant wedge a screwdriver in the flywheel teeth to keep it from turning on me, and NO, i will NOT be resurfacing that flywheel...at least not this time...
A week and recent rain were not kind to me...cleaned it off with the brass wire brush (trust me).
CORRECT clutch alignment tool (got the wrong one last week)...aligning...marks aligned...
Voila!
