Trash Policy


NIAGARA SQUARE CONDOMINIUM ASSOCIATION TRASH POLICY

1. Refuse collection is provided twice a week – MONDAY AND THURSDAY. Recyclables are collected on TUESDAY.

2. Recycling goes in the container marked “Recycling “. The containers are in the refuse area. Cardboard boxes/corrugated cardboard must be flattened and tied and bundled together not stacked. Please note that your recyclables don’t need to be sorted and should be placed loosely in the recycling cart for collection. They should not be bagged. Paper coffee cups, makeup wipes, takeout containers, and pizza boxes are all items that usually cannot be recycled due to contamination. Any recyclables with food should be rinsed

3. Trash is to be kept in the Unit until it is placed at the collection area. Trash must not be left in any other place.

4. Everything going into the trash dumpster must be put into plastic garbage bags and securely fastened at the top before disposal into the dumpster. Wet garbage should be double wrapped.

5. Cardboard boxes/corrugated cardboard must be flattened and tied and bundled together.

6. Wrap sharp objects (broken glass/sharp metal) in heavy paper and place in a box reinforced with tape or string.

7. Should breakage of plastic disposable bags occur en route to or at the collection point. Residents are responsible for rebagging and cleaning up the refuse as soon as possible.

8. Place animal feces and litter in double plastic bags and place in the refuse container.

9. Bulk items include large items such as furniture. These may include sofas, recliner chairs, tables, box springs, mattresses, dressers. Do not place bulk items out for removal until the evening before collection. Do not place bulk items in the dumpsters. Any excess material will NOT be collected unless special pickup arrangements are made in advance. A cost of at least$100 for each half hour applies to special pickup and is the responsibility of the resident/tenant.

10. Every effort should be made by all to ensure that the common areas of Niagara Square are kept clean and free of dust.

11. Installation of in-home trash compacts is encouraged to reduce the volume of trash.

12. Freon appliances (refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers), TV’s, computers, and monitors are the responsibility of Unit Owner/tenant.

13. TV’s and Computers – The following items are not permitted in the landfill and must go to special recycling facilities. Owner/tenant responsibility.

  • Televisions

  • Computer monitors

  • Computer towers

  • Computer peripherals (keyboards, mice, etc)

  • Printers

Televisions, computers, and computer peripherals including monitors, keyboards, mouse, external drives, and printers must be taken to a e-recycling facility. The Pittsburgh Recycling center is located in the Strip District at 3001 Railroad Street, Pittsburgh, PA.

14. Freon Appliances – It is the Owners/tenants responsibility to plan to dispose of Freon appliances refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc.)

15. Trash Collection Company does not take carpeting installed by a professional, construction, building, explosive, medical, hazardous, infectious, or flammable materials as well as car and automobile parts, bricks, cement, glass blocks, or marble or stone countertops. It is the Unit Owners responsibility.

16. Prohibited Materials: Propane tanks, smoke detectors and chemicals are some examples of prohibited materials. For information on disposing of these and other materials, which may be hazardous, please call Environmental Services at 412-255-2773.

Additional Information:

The common elements shall not be used for storage of supplies, materials, personal property, or trash or refuse of any kind, except as otherwise provided in duly adopted Rules and Regulations of the Association. Trash collection will be in accordance with rules adopted by the Association and in compliance with Pittsburgh Public Works, and Vogel Disposal Services, Inc., our trash collect hauler.

The common elements shall not be used in any way for the drying, shaking, or airing of clothing or other fabrics. In general, no activity shall be carried on nor condition maintained by a co-owner either in his unit or upon the common elements, which detracts from the clean, pleasant, and peaceful appearance and setting of the Condominium.

Preventing Litter:

Litter is the result of individual behavior, whether choosing to litter or being careless in the handling of waste. Once litter is on the ground it attracts more litter. The Niagara Square Homeowners Association discourages littering. It is the responsibility of every resident to not litter and to discourage littering. By keeping our community clean we are improving the appearance of Niagara Square and the quality of life.

PENNSYLVANIA'S COVERED DEVICE RECYCLING ACT:

As of Thursday, January 24th, 2013, you can no longer dispose of TVs or computers with your regular trash. Pennsylvania's Covered Device Recycling Act is now in effect. It requires the proper recycling of all TVs and computer equipment, including computer monitors, central processing units (CPUs), laptops, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, speakers, and other devices connected to a computer.

Visit the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for more information, or call its toll-free hotline at 1.800.346.4242 with questions about electronic recycling. There are various electronics collections programs at the manufacturer and retail locations, and public recycling drop-off locations in Allegheny County. Additional Information:

The Condominium Association strictly prohibits the temporary storage of trash on common areas such as balconies or front porches.
