Combined efforts

Under the combined efforts of Hazara University Mansehra, Leicester University UK and Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, a team was organized under British council “INSPIRE” project to conduct archaeological investigation in Chitral valley. This project is headed under the directorships of Vice chancellor Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali and Dr. Ruth Young of Leicester University UK. The unique aspect of this research project is to conduct “Transect survey”, the first experiment of its kind in Pakistan archaeology.During this research project a team of archaeologist and other technical experts discovered remains of ancient fortress in Chamurkun village, Chitral. This newly discovered fortress is located at the height of 5500 feet, according to initial investigation the highest ancient fortress so far discovered in Pakistan. Team members also revealed some new evidences of “Gandhara Grave Culture”. According to Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali, these graves are almost 3000 years old, and contributing some fresh information in South Asian archaeology.Prof Dr Ihsan Ali while congratulating his team also added that the region of North West of Pakistan was the melting pot of different cultures and civilizations, and that AWKUM will continue to explore and investigate the past glory of this land.Other team members of INSPIRE project are Dr Ibrahim Shah (Hazara University) Abdul Samad (Hazara University) Haq Nawaz (Hazara University) Meher Rehmanm, Ashfaq Daudzai, Mohammad Qasim and Abid Mehmood (AWKUM)
