In the past, Canvas' YouTube embed tool has worked seamlessly to embed YouTube videos with no ads or pop-ups as well as allow students to view the educational content that YouTube has asynchronously. However, as of January, it appears that YouTube made some changes that affected this feature. Canvas is aware and this has been reported.
Many thanks to one of our new rock‑star teachers at the high school who shared a helpful workaround to embed YouTube videos in a Canvas Assignment or Page so students can watch at their own pace and avoid pop‑ups. Below are the steps to add -nocookie to the embed code so your students can view the videos more cleanly.
Thank you again for your patience — hopefully Canvas will resolve this soon. Please let me know if you’d like me to help apply the workaround to any pages or assignments.
Click Embed and copy given code
Create and edit Canvas Assignment and or Page
Paste the code copied from YouTube
In the url for the YouTube video type -nocookie between youtube and .com
so your HTML will look like this www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/bSgP-NcE-Hs?si=aj6hUzlBbtgPNRdU
Did you know you can embed a Youtube video in Canvas and get NO ADS or POP-UPS!?!?!
