In module three we will read chapter ten through thirteen. We are going to use a pretty simple and fun skill in this module. I want you to practice visualizing and using your senses as you read. When you are reading can you "see" what is going on? Can you picture or imagine Katniss' home in district twelve? What does her sister look like? What are the characters' facial expressions and body language like when they do something or interact with someone else? Visualizing is basically using your sense of sight, but you are able to create a mental picture for yourself in your head. The cool thing, is that there is no right or wrong visualization. We are all going to create a different mental picture that will help us understand the book in our own way. For instance when I "see" district twelve, I see dusty roads, an old fashioned village with broken down wooden shacks, and not much color anywhere. What do you see when you try to visualize Katniss' outfits? There are so many things that you can visualize. Try to make it like a movie in your mind.
Using our other senses is helpful too. Can you "hear" what the characters'voice sound like? Can you hear the sounds of the district, and the woods? Doing this will make the story come alive for you. What are some of the smells you would expect in the Hob? What tastes and smells does Katniss describe as she is in the capitol? What do you think it feels like to have such a luxurious bed and shower? In your journal write at least two parts from the book in which you used each of your senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell). Note the page for each example.
Finally, although feelings are not considered one of the six senses, I would like you to try to use them here. I think that considering what the characters' feelings might be is extremely important to understanding a story. As you read, ask yourself what you think some of the characters are feeling. Sometimes the text suggests how they are feeling, but what I really want you to think about is how they might be feeling in parts of the book that it doesn't specifically mention an emotion. In your journal write at least two parts from the book in which you imagined what the character was feeling. Note the page for each example.
