Synopsis of the book:
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining capitol where people live in luxury, surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and respect to his or her district. but that is nothing compare to what the capital wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rule. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen lives with her mother and younger sister, Prim. She provides for them, and is fiercely protective of Prim. Katniss regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the games. But Katniss has been close to dead before, and survival, for her, is second nature. She is left with no choice but to become a competitor in the capitol's games, but if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity, and life against love.
About the Science Fiction genre:
Science fiction is often characterized by plots that are set in the future, and by technological advances that do not exist in our world but that are most of the time scientifically possible. Set in a different time and/or place, the "world" that science fiction plots take place in, have very different sets of rules and practices. Science fiction and fantasy have a lot of elements in common, since fantasy is often set in a different time and place, and features a world with different rules and practices as well. Usually the difference between science fiction and fantasy is that fantasy uses elements of magic that are not scientifically possible. Sometimes however authors mix elements of both of these genres. Some books that fall into the fantasy category are the Harry Potter series and The Chronicles of Narnia. Other science fiction books include The Giver and A Wrinkle in Time.
