Course Description
This is an exploration of human behaviors. Areas investigated include the brain and nervous system, learning and memory, the scientific method, theories of behavior, personality development, states of consciousness, and abnormal behaviors as well as treatment options. The ability to recognize concepts and perform analysis of complex material is recommended for students taking this course.
Iowa Core Curriculum and Essential Skills
Students will be able to understand the interactions of the individual and society and analyze human behavior and the range of its influences on human development to promote lifelong wellness.
Understand the historical development of the behavioral sciences and the changing nature of society.
Understand the influences on individual and group behavior and group decision making
Understand the appropriate research procedures and skills of the behavioral scientist.
Understand current social issues to determine how the individual is able to formulate opinions and responds to those issues.
Understand how social status, social groups, social change, and social institutions influence individual and group behaviors.
Understand the process of how humans develop, learn, adapt to their environment, and internalize their culture.
Understand how personality and agents of socialization impact the individual.
Course Information
Psychology is a one term course.
Psychology meets the Group III (Behaviorial Sciences) requirement from the Social Studies content area and will provide students with .5 units (credit) for graduation. There are no prerequisites for this class.

Supplementary Text, Internet and Media Center Materials, Newspaper, Community Resources, Maps and Globes., Material fees/ additional cost for computer printing in LMC- 10 cents per copy. Students are required to obtain the following supplies within three days of course start: A two-inch 3-ring binder, two college-type spiral notebooks, 3x5 note cards, pens and/or pencils.
Instructional Procedures & Support
Students are expected to keep a notebook. Classroom activities will include (but not limited to), guided and individual reading, text assignments, large and small group discussions, guided lectures, examining primary source materials, and performance tasks.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is copying another person’s work. In this class you may work together on many assignments. However, the work you turn in must be in your own words. You need to paraphrase the idea being shared. When grading work and I see the same answer, with the same sentence structure, with the same grammar and syntax then it is plagiarism. Assessment Plan (also see Syllabus Part 2 for more details)
A. Projects will be completed.
B. Assessments might incl quizzes, chap or unit tests, end of term tests.
C. A final will be a given.
D. Completed homework.
E. Class participation.
Final Class Grade: class work (30%), class projects (30%), tests (30%), and the final (10%). Note: Late work is reduced by 40% (“D”)
Grading System
Grading scale*: A+ = 100% C = 70-79%
*Students must do more A = 90-99% D = 60-69%
work for higher grade. B = 80-89% F = 0-59%
