A Teen-Parent Contract is used to reduce high-risk teen behavior. The 1st year is the most dangerous for teen drivers. Government data show that: 1) Per mile driven, 16-year-olds are involved in more than 5 times as many fatal crashes as adults, 2) Nearly half of 16- and 17- year-old drivers involved in fatal crashes were carrying at least one passenger under 21 and no adult passengers, and 3) Over one-third of deaths of 16- and 17-year-old drivers occur between 9 PM and 6 AM.
Ø There are many different types of parent contracts. If you don't like the one provided in class, no problem, pick another one (see files below)! However, to be of value they need to at least put some restrictions on the teenager driver to reduce high-risk behaviors
Minimum requirements:
1) Must be signed and dated by both the parent and teenager.
2) Must be in effect for at least six months (it may be longer or until the end of Stage 2, Intermediate License).
3) Must limit the number of passengers in the car without parent supervision.
4) Must limit the hours of automobile use (curfew) and mandate the use of seatbelts.
5) Must prohibit any drug or alcohol use while driving and prohibits not getting into a car when the driver is on drugs or has been drinking (teen should call parent for a ride).
6) Any other restrictions the parent/teen feel are needed to reduce high-risk behaviors.
Note: Parents should consider a “graduated” contract where more “freedom” with less restrictions are granted based on experience and time driven accident & conviction free.
