One of my first projects with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was to design an online learning opportunity for patients and families visiting the CHOP oncology department. Children need to be given a medicine to increase their white blood cell counts after chemotherapy, but the medication does not come in pediatric doses. The goal was to give families an opportunity to practice drawing up the medication and transferring their child's specific amount to a secondary syringe. We wanted them to be able to practice this skill in a safe way prior to meeting with a nurse expert to return demonstrate. This is the result.

Another project I produced for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was to design an online learning opportunity for caregivers whose child has a tracheostomy. There is robust face-to-face training for families at CHOP prior to discharge but we wanted to provide opportunities for families to preview and practice skills prior to classes, review skills at a later date, and help additional caregivers who were not trained in the hospital to learn these skills to support the primary caregiver. This is the result. (Note: This module was so well received that is also being used to train homecare nursing staff on the CHOP Open platform.

One project I produced with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was to design an online preparatory digital learning binder for families of children who require a blood or bone marrow transplant. This is offered as a digital reference guide that they can check from a CHOP or personal device before, during, and after their stay in the hospital. There are explanatory videos, interactive timelines, and visual steps to learn about the care of their child. The chaptering of this content allows families to explore the content that is relevant to their child and the step in the care process, without getting overwhelmed.

A project that I found challenging and rewarding was a short animation that I developed to prepare children for their upcoming endoscopy visit. Preparing for a child's first time undergoing anesthesia can be confusing and worrisome. There may be a lot of questions. Answering as many as possible and encouraging more to be asked during the visit was the goal of this animation. I got to partner with the Child Life specialists at CHOP to tailor the script and visuals for a pediatric audience. Also partnered with a medical illustrator and animator to develop some of the medical-specific animations. Finally, I got to coach a young voice actor, my 12-year-old daughter, during the recording of the dialogue.

Instructional videos are useful to demonstrate care for a variety of learners. This video demonstrates how to use a metered dose inhaler (MDI) with a spacer and a mask. Topics include when to get a new inhaler, when and how to prime it, understanding the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Asthma Care Plan, when and how to take the inhaled medication with a spacer, and how to keep the inhaler and spacer clean.
