His friends knew Edward J Smith as Jeff. Jeff’s classmates described him as a dexterous dancer who also had a great voice; after all Jeff was a member of the all-state chorus. Jeff was also voted the “most talkative” student of the Class of 62 which explains why he was famous for his frequent comments.
We are not sure what type of student Jeff was, but looking through the yearbook we quickly realized Jeff was an extremely committed young man. In an era before resume padding was necessary, Jeff joined over 15 sports teams and extracurricular activities including football, track, the AVA club, three types of bands, the literary magazine and the German Club to just name a few. His yearbook prophecy also hinted at his commitment to his country. He predicted he would join the Navy. He did join; once again Jeff joined an organization, and once again he gave it his all.
