William T. Haines, who lived at 91 Pocono Road, was the only Laker who died during the Korean War. Voted “class artist” by his classmates, Bill wrote in the yearbook encyclopedia that he was famous for his friendliness, that model airplanes were his weakness and that he was probably allergic to French class.
Each graduate from the Class of 47 wrote an acrostic poem using the first letters of his name to describe himself. Billy wrote the following ditty: B for “Blond & Blue-eyed”, I for “infectious grin”, double Ls for “lackadaisical” and “lover of planes” and finally Y for “yen for aviation.” After high school Billy finally did join Air Force. He just never got the chance to come home and become the engineer he wanted to be. Billy was killed in action on the 15th of June in 1953.
