SEAMAN JOHN JAMES

The Mid Cumberland and Westmorland Herald of 19 January 1919 captions Seaman John James above as "A.B. James"

I suspect this is a typing error for Able Seaman James.

The underlying text refers to him as A.B. John James of Warcop, died of wounds.

Herald 12th Jan 1918

Able seaman John James, Warcop. On Monday morning the sad news reached Mr and Mrs John James Warcop that their third son Able Seaman John James Royal Naval Division had died of wounds in France......

By the same post 2 letters were received from the Rev FR Wearmouth, Primitive Methodist Chaplain  one saying that their son was in hospital on account of wounds in the thigh and back and the other saying that he had died of wounds on 31st Dec and was buried in the military cemetery nearby.

Prior to the war Able Seaman James had been engaged in farm work and was in the employ of Mr Dobson Sleagill House, Shap for some 11 years. He was a most kindhearted and straightforward young man and a capital judge of farm stock. He went into training 19th June 1917 being his 29th birthday. He was home as recently as October and last wrote home on Christmas day
