William emigrated to Montreal Quebec Canada sailing on the Corsican from Liverpool on 6th November 1908-described as a labourer.
He married in 1916 in Chester-le-Street His wife was Beatrice Annie Raine who was living at The King's Arms Morland in the 1911 census- her mother was the Innkeeper aged 50 who subsequently married John Parkin of Cragg House Sleagill in1916 . They had a child

Mrs James has received official notice that her husband Private WE James Canadian Transport Section France was killed on 5th November by a shell bursting in the midst of them. He was killed instantly. Son of Mr H James Syke Farm Morland now of Vancouver Canada. He was formerly a groom in the employ of Colonel Markham and left there for Canada. He joined the army soon after the war broke out. He had been 15 months in France when he got leave and had only been back in France a few days when he was killed. Private James was only 25 years of age. He married Miss Raine daughter of Mrs Parkin of Sleagill and leaves her and one child.

Mrs James Backholme Lodge Lowther has received 2 letters regarding her husband Private WE James Canadian Contingent whose fall in France was recorded last week. The chaplain reported a shell made a direct hit on his tent at 4.30a.m. Captain Neal wrote 'not a finer or more trustworthy man in all my section...died having done his duty by serving his country in her hour of need....you will be glad to know he died instantly and without pain'.
