In the 1911 census he was a stepson of William and Jane Ann Burgess, aged 18, farmer's son working on farm, born Langwathby, Cumberland, resident Gatelands, Morland.

William Burgess, Jane Ann Burgess, lohn Threlkeld and Mary Violet Burgess all shown on

the census.

John is listed as William's step-son and is working on the family farm.

He spent time in Canada and California- possibly travelling out to St John N.B. On 27th March 1912 from Liverpool on the Grampian

Next of kin - Mrs Burgess, Morland Field, Penrith - mother.

Killed in action whilst serving with 6th Battalion, Border Regiment.

Service record notes items of private property were - 1Wallet, 6 photos, 1 Card, 1

Registered Envelope and these were returned to his mother Mrs Jane Burgess, Bridge End, Murton, Appleby, Westmorland.

John is commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at Poelcapelle

Mrs Burgess, Murton Appleby late of Morland has heard her only son Private John Threlkeld was killed in action on 4th October.

His Sergeant Major wrote 'small comfort that he died without pain and was buried where he fell marked with a wooden cross'. He enlisted on 24th September 1914, felt it was his duty to enlist. He was sent to France in September 1915 and severely wounded at Delville Wood on 6th August 1916.He went again to France in September. He had spent time in Canada and California. He was remembered at Murton church that Sunday
