Here's a monthly update on what's happening in and around the Community House.

MCA House Happenings

December 2022

Thank you all for a wonderfully successful year for the Metchosin Community Association. There have been many successful events and programs at the House that have not only brought in money to the House, but also a lot of joy to many community members. This was important for our community to re-engage as we come out of the isolation caused by Covid. A special thanks to all of the community volunteers, without which we would not be successful.

The purpose of the MCA is to "initiate, encourage and organize educational, cultural, recreational and community activities in Metchosin." We are interested in your feedback. Please look over the list of programs and events on our website at www.metchosincommunityhouse.com and give us your ideas of what activities you are interested in and would support if the MCA were to initiate them. Whether it is in support of the programs in the Community House or coordinating the use for the municipal bandstand or cricket grounds, or, reaching out to other organizations in Metchosin to ensure we are doing things that would benefit the community as a whole. Please consider asking your neighbours if they would consider joining the association and what they would be looking for in a community association. The more the merrier.

We all live in Metchosin because it is a wonderful place, and through the engagement of many of its residents it has developed into a wonderful community. We invite you to continue to grow that sense of community through participation in some aspect of the Metchosin Community Association. We will all have a better community if you do.

Events

December 15 - 7pm - 9:30pm, Blue Moon Christmas

BLUE MOON CHRISTMAS Returns to the Community House! We’re finally ready to bring back a much-missed Metchosin Christmas tradition – Blue Moon returns to the Community House with their warm evening of festive fun. Songs and stories, old and new, will be shared by local performers just bursting to spread the neighbourhood Christmas spirit we’ve been sadly without for long enough. You’ll hear colourful new tales and tunes along with a few old seasonal favourites. Admission is by cash donation (Santa will pass the hat!) with all proceeds going to help the local foodbank. Refreshments available. Let’s make this a fun-filled year-end reunion!

December 30 - Film Night - 7pm Film Night, Horse Tamer (75 fascinating minutes) Ric Perron

I love this film, so distant and foreign, invigorating, quickly paced. And Mongolian. There aren’t many movies that start out fantastic and keep getting better as the movie progresses. It has many facets and moments of burly awe. With local family interactions, wild festivals of competitions, and bold interactions with horse thieves within the surrounding valleys, this is the Mongolian cowboy frontier that outperforms the Wild-Wild West.

Ten years in the making by French ethnographer [a new word for me] Hamid Sardar follows the range cowboy Shukhert on his eternal voyage to protect and cleanse the land of these horse smugglers.

Award winning in many 2021 Film Festival venues, I can’t say enough how ‘fascinating’ this tribal journey is. You will bond with the central character and his trials and tribulations. As quoted by VIMFF, “In the Darhat valley in northern Mongolia, the horses of nomadic tribes are disappearing. Bandits steal horses from their owners and sell them for a few rubles in Russian slaughterhouses. But Shukhert, a vigilante Darhat horseman, pursues them relentlessly, all the way to the edge of Mongolian taiga, on the border with Siberia.

Art on the Walls: December– Three members of the Drop In Art Group, Linda Kirstein, Anne Ward, and Arlene Welch have put pictures on the wall for the months of October and November. You may visit with the artists any Tuesday from 9:30 to12:30. The works are hanging on the Community House walls for all to come and enjoy. Viewing times: Monday–Wednesday 9:00am–1:00pm. The Art on the Walls program offers the House as a wonderful venue for artists to show and display their works. For more information, please call 250-478-5155.

The Metchosin Community House is OPEN at full capacity to program users and private renters following Communicable Disease protocols. All MCA programs and renters have returned. Please contact your program organizers for more information.

The MCA requests that all program leads, and private renters review our organization’s updated "Covid Safety Plan", which is based on recommendations from BC Health. Attached is a link to the most recent BC Health orders:

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content?id=762AD642C5524DC9B6F4D7463D275C46

The MCA also strongly recommends that these guidelines are a minimum and suggest rental and program organizers err on the side of caution when enforcing masking and vaccination guidelines, especially when there are high-risk participants or activities in the house. Community House user groups and private renters are required to self-monitor and not use the facility if they are ill or/and have symptoms of a communicable disease or have had recent contact with someone who has a communicable disease. Masks are suggested and at your discretion.
