Research is a major component to the field of history, where students learn strategies and skills to take with them to future opportunities and careers. Being the history teacher, it is my job to teach the skills and strategies, as well as the love and importance of research. I need to be a role model for my students by showing that a person should always be curious to learn and research new information and ideas.
As an educator, it is also important for me to conduct my own research in learning how to become a more effective teacher. Whether its conducting my own research with my students as the subjects, attending conferences, reading education journals, it is my responsibility to my school and my students to be knowledgeable about the different strategies of teaching.
Being a researcher also means being a reflective practitioner. Taking results from formative and summative assessments is day to day research a teacher conducts. From assessments I reflect on my own teaching practices. What needs to change? What strategies work? How do I engage more students in content and skills? These are the questions I ask myself after collecting data from assessments to better my teaching practices.
