One of the roles of a teacher is being an advocate. This role has many facets. First, I am an advocate for education. I believe education is one of the most powerful tools a person can have to make changes in the world. My students will receive the education to become informed citizens of this increasingly globalized world.
The second facet is being an advocate for my students. As a teacher I believe it is extremely important to advocate for equitable opportunities to learn for all my students. Each student deserves to be held to high standards, to be challenged, to be able to express and communicate their ideas. Students should be able to feel safe in a school environment to learn, grow, and achieve academic and life goals.
The third facet is closely linked with the first two in that I am also an advocate for myself, a teacher as a professional. Not only do students deserve safe community environments, but teachers also deserve safe, equitable community workplaces. Being an advocate for teachers as a profession closely links with valuing education in general in that the future generations of adults deserve high quality education with high quality teachers. I hope to be one of those deserving high quality teachers advocating for my students and my profession.
