What does it mean to be a professional? As an aspiring teacher I believe it means being an effective teacher. Having relevant lessons for my students prepared every day. Being prepared for my students to learn. It means collaborating with my fellow content area teachers, my grade level teachers, the special educations teacher, the ESL or bilingual specialists, and other staff members.
As a teacher, being a professional means effectively incorporating the standards my students should be able to meet at their grade level. I am a teacher who helps my students meet their academic goals. I am a teacher who effectively communicates with students, parents, co-workers, and administration.
I have thought about what it means to be a professional, especially as a history teacher. My goal is not to have students merely memorize historical dates, places, people. I want my students to understand how to think about the past, how to think about how the past connects to our present world. Students should walk away from my class with ways of thinking, reading, writing, and strategies for studying and researching information.
The many roles of the teacher are very much related to each other, but out of all of them, being a professional encompasses being an advocate, a craftsperson, and a researcher.
