Neighborhood Calls for Service 5/23 to 10/23
October 2023 - October 2025 Here's a recap of recent neighborhood calls for service to the Leon County Sheriff's Office...
It's been an amazingly quiet and calm fall, winter and spring, on the neighborhood crime front. There were two calls for service from our neighborhood this period:
Petit Theft $100 - $750 on Windermere in December
This was likely preventable by the Neighborhood Crime Watch.
Notably absent are burglaries...for more than two years now we've been vigilant at removing the opportunity. Keep up the good work...locking those car doors every night, storing tools and yard equipment properly in the garage or shed, and locking up those spaces, or simply keeping an eye out for things and people that just don't belong!
All of these simple actions contribute to removing the opportunity for someone to commit a crime.
Given the nature and large number of unresolved cases over the years, either due to little or no physical evidence, the victim's unwillingness to pursue, or the availability of resources to investigate, prevention is the best way to reduce crime in the neighborhood. An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure!
Since our initial outbreak of residential burglaries in 2014 and 2015, which inspired the organization of our neighborhood watch, we have seen a steady decline and near elimination. The burglary in 2021 was of a porch, patio or out-building.
It’s important to note that in every vehicle burglary case since 2014, never was a window broken or a lock jimmied. They were all crimes of opportunity...the car was left unlocked and the criminal was invited in! It's easy to do...you bring groceries in, or you go out to get something from the car, and you forget to lock it back.
A Simple Crime Prevention Tip: Make it a habit to always lock your car and double-check it's locked each night by clicking the remote before you go to bed. Or, download the LCSO Connect mobile app and subscribe to the "9 pm Routine" notification to receive the reminder each night.
Request extra Patrol through the Sheriff's Office when leaving town
Valuable items within your home need to be taken out of view
Lighting timers
Stop the mail and the paper
Remove hidden spare keys
Ask neighbors to put garbage cans out and pull them back to the side of the home
Mow your lawn low before you go or hire someone to maintain your yard while you are gone
Lock all doors and windows
Turn off the garage door opener while out of town; put a padlock through the track

Install exterior motion lights on your home
Install and use your deadbolts, with extra long screws
Do not post that you are out of town on Facebook or other social media
