Keyboard Alternatives
Modified keyboards can help persons use the computer and other electronics that require keyboard input. Modified keyboards can take several different forms:
Customizable keyboards -- Designed for persons with physical, vision, and cognitive disabilities. The keyboard offers flexible layout options so the user can choose the layout, key information, size, etc.
Ergonomic keyboards -- Designed for persons with limited finger movement due to hand or wrist injuries, manual dexterity limitations, limited wrist/arm strength, amputation, or stroke. These are typically designed to reduce strain through different keyboard sizes, angles and layouts.
Large-key keyboards -- Designed for persons with manual dexterity disabilities or low vision. The keys are typically larger than on traditional keyboards.
Large-print keyboards -- Designed for persons with low vision. The keyboards may have larger print (but not necessarily larger keys) and higher contrast printing than traditional keyboards.
Small-sized keyboards -- Designed for use by persons with limited manual dexterity or who type on keyboards with a finger, a stylus, or a mouth-stick. The keyboards are smaller and keys are close together to maximize speed and comfort.
