The biggest portion of our annual budget goes to fund our semiannual Merit Awards: Monetary awards that go to the most dedicated drama students who demonstrate a serious commitment to the performing arts. You see with that level of commitment there often are some tradeoffs. For example, the demands of the creative process make it difficult to keep a regular job when you are in class all day and at rehearsals all night. Many times the support received from the Spotlight Circle makes the difference between a student literally being able to afford being in a play in a given semester or not, and we are pleased and proud to make that assistance available and help make their participation possible.

Beyond these Merit Awards and scholarships, we look for other ways that we can help the Theatre program. It can be as simple as when we paid for the hot dogs and burgers for a BBQ for MiraCosta students to introduce new folks to all of the courses offered by the Drama department. That was a quick, easy, and very affordable way for us to create awareness on campus of all that the theatre has to offer and it encouraged some students to make time to add the performing arts to their curriculum.
What else? … Well, we have paid for a professional stage combat choreographer to work with the students on the fight scenes. We have covered the entry fees for students to theatre festivals. We hired a costumer to sort through and organize the thousands of costume pieces that were at times basically just tossed in jumbled heaps into the storage areas of the theatre. We also hired someone to do a similar organization effort for the countless props in storage. Our Foundation has also purchased lighting and sound equipment and specialty materials for the makeup laboratory. Etc. Etc.
Whatever we can do to be of help to the theatre program and its students… That’s what we are there for.
