Here is an example of how the Maximum Bid process can keep you in the running for a prize, even when you are not at the Theatre to keep an eye on the Auction action yourself.
EXAMPLE BID SHEET:
ITEM # 14 TWO SEAFARER CRUISE PASSES
Donated by: HORNBLOWER CRUISES
Estimated Value: $100
Minimum Bid Increase = $4 {a}
(You must increase the previous bid by at least $4)
BID NAME PHONE NUMBER
$25 Minimum Opening Bid
---
$25 Fletcher Christian 760-555-3582
$32 Dennis Conner 858-555-4672
{b} $36 Brian Smith 760-555-5232
{c} $40 Chester Nimitz 760-555-8365
{d} $44 Brian Smith By Proxy
{e} $48 William Halsey, Jr. 858-555-5627
In this example, Brian Smith is interested in Item #14, which has a minimum bid increase of $4 {a} , and which has already received bids from Fletcher Christian and Dennis Conner.
Brian made a $36 bid in person, entering his name and phone number on the bid sheet {b} and had turned in a Maximum Bid form indicating that he would bid up to $50 on that Item.
At the next show (when Brian is not there), an audience member (Chester Nimitz) enters a new bid of $40. {c} As soon as the Spotlight Auction Monitors notice this new bid, they will check Brian’s Maximum Bid card. You see that by adding the minimum bid increase of $4 to the newly placed bid of $40, that total of $44 would still be under Brian’s Maximum Bid of $50. Therefore, the Monitor would enter his new bid {d} of $44 (the previous high bid plus the $4 bid increment) / the name “Brian Smith” / and the entry “By Proxy” under the Phone Number line. In this way, we have placed the bid that Brian would have made himself, if he had been present.
If another audience member (William Halsey, Jr.) then makes the next possible bid increment, bringing the bidding up to $48 {e}, we would again check Brian’s Maximum Bid card. In this case, if you add the $4 minimum bid increment to the current bid of $48 {e}, the next allowable bid ($52) would exceed Brian’s predetermined Maximum Bid of $50. Therefore, the Auction Monitor will NOT bid on this item for him again. Brian is done bidding on this item. This Maximum Bid sequence is completed.
As you can see, the Spotlight Auction Monitor will act on your behalf as your proxy and will continue to place bids for you, even when you are not physically able to be at the auction site, in the smallest possible amount to keep you in the running, all the way up to (but never exceeding) your predetermined Maximum Bid.
So by all means, do let us know (in person at the Auction or by an email message) the highest amount you would be willing to pay for the prize you have your eye on. Placing a Maximum Bid is a simple, effective, and stress-free way to increase your chances of winning the items that interest you.
