It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to attend “2018 International Conference on Precision Science in Life and Health, Matsu”. The conference is under the auspices of Lienchiang County Government and National Taiwan University. Experts and students from Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, UK, and Norway will join the conference. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the speakers and all the participants in our conference.

The Matsu islets are separated from Taiwan by the Taiwan Strait with a population of around ten thousand nowadays, which administered as Lienchian county. It is famous for the battlefield culture, wine, seafood, and fascinating traditional culture. Development in the Matsu Islands began during the Yuan dynasty. At that time, residents in the area were in close contact with the coast of Fujian on the Mainland China. During the cold war, Matsu as the former military frontline contains many battlefield sites and military facilities from its half-century isolation since 1949.

Gastric carcinoma was the most common cancer in Matzu accounting for one fourth of all cancers by the late 1990s. Matsu community-based gastric cancer screening and integrated prevention program were therefore launched since 1996. We also support strongly various community-wide preventive services aimed to promote healthy life expectancy. Among these, Matsu Community-based Integrated Screening (MACIS) has become a hallmark. Nowadays, Matsu has longest Life expectancy in Taiwan.

To save lives is the task and the responsibility of the government. There is no reason to be complacent. Let Matsu become a health island is my dream. I wish this meeting can be taken herald for political policy-makers to pay attention to all the health related problems in order to prepare an adequate policy.
